A Pune school, open on all days for 20 years, sets example

PUNE: A Pune zilla parishad primary school in Kardelwadi in Shirur taluka, some 60km from the city, operated by two teachers has been open on all days of the year for more than 20 years.

Students have delivered good results in scholarship and other competitive exams over the years and word of the quality of education here has gone beyond the district’s boundaries to draw a National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT) team’s deep appreciation on its visit in early March.

When rural schooling has large gaps in learning, the team saw that students in this school were able to read and write well even before entering Std I.
Assistant professor at NCERT Vishal Pajankar, who was part of the visiting team, said that the school was a good example for others in the country.

A detailed research on its functioning, good practices and how they achieved such a feat could be emulated.

Pajankar, “At a time when we are reporting student drop out annually, this school has set an example of drawing students for all days of the year. The teachers have put in commendable efforts for overall development of the students.”

According to NCERT, the objectives of the study was to look into the role and functions of teachers in planning and implementation of various activities, teaching-learning processes and support from the community members, parents and alumni. The study will be carried out for 20-30 days by the team now. Another team is scheduled to visit in April.

When teacher Dattaraya Sakat joined the school in 2001, it had poor infrastructure, low academic standards and students from the village would hardly report for classes. Sakat then decided to bring about an academic environment and get back students.

“I felt that apart from academics, there are many other activities that students could be interested in such as gardening, sports, watching films and fun games. I introduced these and we saw that the children from the village enthusiastically participated. Slowly, the word spread among the other children and they started to come over on weekends for these activities. Soon, the enrolment which was barely in tens at that time has grown grew to 110 today.”

Sakat’s next move was to improve the quality of education. Children were introduced to audio-visual medium with content that he developed. It had colour, music and graphics that made the concepts easier to understand.
